Austin-based Birds Barbershop needed to make birdsbarbershop.com responsive for mobile devices, which also meant designing the mobile site in a way that would increase walk-ins by mobile users.
On a mobile site, every extra bit of scrolling or clicking a viewer must do increases the likelihood they will simply give up or hit the back button. For Birds Barbershop, all the stuff that’s important for mobile users – like phone numbers, locations, and the stylists’ schedule – had to be so easy to find, users wouldn’t even have to think about it.
Ridiculously simple navigation was a must to make sure customers didn’t give up.
The important navigation items on the mobile site are the locations tab and the schedules tab. From either of these tabs, users can see their selected shop’s address and phone number, and tap to call ahead. The locations tab offers one-tap access to the user’s maps app in case they need directions. The schedules tab lets users see at a glance when their preferred stylist is working that week.
Our biggest focus was on the schedules tab, which needed a complete overhaul when we started this project. Formerly, the process of updating the week’s online schedule for each Birds location had been an all-day process done by hand. Jackrabbit team members met the client on-site to understand how their scheduling process worked and how to improve it.
We improved the scheduling process so the online calendar is easy to keep updated.
Now, all it takes is one CSV file to generate a new week’s schedule for the site. It’s faster and easier for Birds Barbershop, and it’s clearer and more reliable for customers. The last step was to make sure that the schedule, which is seven days wide, downsized nicely and legibly for mobile screens.
The new Birds Barbershop mobile site is more eye-catching than its predecessor, and is easier to navigate despite containing more information. We worked with the client’s CMS system to make the new site easier for Birds employees to update on their own whenever they have a new schedule or changes to the site’s content. All these changes have put time back into Birds employees’ days, and made haircuts much more convenient for Birds customers!
